coworker saw me drawing a tiny spongebob on something at the hostess stand and he said “oh that looks like something from the nightmares of my generation…” i said “spongebob???” he said “no you would not know it. it was a soviet cartoon in the nineties. it haunts me to this day.” and then sure enough a minute later he showed me a pic on his phone of what i can only describe as soviet robot spongebob

@gyrow1 found the name of the cartoon in the replies (“nu pogodi”) THANK YOU LMAO i couldn’t just read it off my coworker’s phone bc obviously his google search was not in english. anyway.

A lot of people talk about how frustrating it is that you’re guaranteed some amount of audience when you write fanfiction that’s not there when you write original fiction - and that is frustrating, but, having waded around in the soup of amateur self-publishing for a few years, I get it now.

People talk about how fanfiction is easier to write because having pre-made characters, settings, conflicts, etc. does a lot of the heavy lifting for the writer, but I’ve never really heard anyone talk about it from the angle of the reader.

If you imagine a story is like a set of stairs taking you where you want to go, all of that stuff is pre-made scaffolding. There is a baseline minimum of structural integrity that all of that gives the story that is very much not present in original fiction. The ways people can fail to write original novels are mind-bending. As bad as the average fanfiction is, the average self-published novel is much worse. When you’re reading a completely unvetted original novel, you just don’t know if it’s going to collapse underneath your weight, possibly maiming you in the process - and they’re asking you to pay them for the pleasure. No wonder it’s easier to convince people to read fanfiction!

fanfic also has the added bonus of having pre-established characters you’re already rooting for. Forgetting all the stuff like plot and setting, fanfic begins on the premise that you’re already invested in these characters and what happens to them.

With novels, the only person who (hopefully) cares about those characters is the writer. And if they start the book with that care without first establishing why everyone else should love them then it can fall apart pretty quickly.

Astraeus sweater!! Pattern by Bad Wolf Girl Studios. Knitted up with Malabrigo Arroyo, my absolute favorite yarn.

Ok show her this and say something like since you knit you can answer this (or I saw this and thought of you), how hard is it to do something like this? If she answers oh this is really hard/ that’s expert level then thank her and move on. If she acts like she could do it bring it up again later. How lucky you are to have someone who asks what she can make for you.
